The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 091To Smash the Spider!
Story: Stan Lee
Pencilling: Gil Kane
Inking: John Romita
Lettering: Sam Rosen
Originally published: December 1970

Solid issue. Gwen, Jameson and apparently the whole city are starting an anti-Spider-Man crusade. Gwen volunteers to help a former cop turned politician, Sam Bullit. Bullit is running for DA and, little to Gwen’s knowledge, is planning on using Stacy’s death to further his campaign. The dude is ultra-conservative and a little bit crazy.

Peter’s having a major crisis of conscience when Bullit and his goons show up and grab him. Bullit knows that Pete’s snapped a lot of pictures of Spidey, and he wants Pete’s help in catching the webslinger.

Interesting quote from Bullit – who at one point is called a fascist:

Son, I’m try to clean up this city! Nobody’s gonna stop me! Anyone who doesn’t help me is on the side of the lawless!

Hmm…sounds kind of familiar.

When Pete refuses to help Bullit, his men give Parker a wee bit of a beating. Once they leave he quickly turns into Spider-Man and chases after them. Afterwords Pete goes home, still dressed as Spidey, only to find Gwen and Bullit in his apartment!
