Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 1 -001That Thompson Boy!
Writer: J.M. DeMatteis
Pictures: Luke Ross & Dan Green
Letters: Richard Starkings
Colors: John Kalisz
Originally published: July 1997

The first thing that struck me about reading this issue is that Peter doesn’t really know who Flash Thompson is here; it’s presented as Peter’s first run-in with him. This is fine, except that doesn’t really jive with all those Petey comics where they’re interacting. By stretching my imagination a bit, though, it’s easy to get past this. Either way, it shouldn’t detract from the actual quality of the book.

This is a strong story contrasting two boys and their relationships with their parents. Peter’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May are great parents to him; if anything, they are over-concerned for Peter’s well-being. Flash’s dad, on the other hand, is an abusive drunk and basically a douchebag. This book had really excellent writing and you really felt for both characters.

The writing was helped by fantastic art by Ross, Green and Kalisz. They did a great job of capturing the emotion of the story, the highs and lows of both characters. My favourite two panels are here, showing the relief the Thompsons feel when Flash’s dad leaves for work.
